Key Terms

Somatic Psychotherapy

Somatic psychotherapy is built on the idea that the mind and the body are deeply interconnected. While some parts of our sessions will include a lot of talking and thinking, there will also be experiential exercises that place intentional focus on body sensation. Experiences of safety, wellbeing, connection, fear, sadness, and anxiety show up in our body as physical sensation. In our work together, we will work to help you explore the connection between your mind and body so that you can discover new resources for emotional regulation.

Sometimes, working with the inner territory of our mind can heal discomfort in the body. Sometimes, connecting to our body can help process and heal our painful thoughts and emotions. I do weave in more cognitive and behavioral modalities (like MBCT, DBT, ACT) when needed.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is simply “the awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally,” according to John Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction program at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. While therapy often focuses on your past and future, our sessions will also include a variety of mindfulness practices to help you strengthen your capacity to connect to the present moment to help you experience safety, joy, focus, connection, and embodiment.

Transpersonal

Transpersonal means “beyond personal.” In session, we can include experiences that go beyond your everyday “you”, or sense of self. We can include the parts of you that connect to your community, activism and belonging. We can include parts of you that connect to non-ordinary states of consciousness (psychedelics, breath work, ecstatic experiences), and we can connect to your religion or spirituality if that feels good for you. I will do my best to honor and include your spiritual practice or religion. Yes, we will certainly talk about the challenging elements of every day life, but we can also go beyond the mundane to connect to life outside yourself.
